Peugeot 307 Hatchback Car Review

Peugeot 307 Hatchback

2008-09-30 06:47:37 - The new bigger, taller Peugeot 307 comes with hatchback, estate, SW (compact MPV) and coupe convertible models. It took the prize home of the European Car of the Year title in 02, the safety features on it have improved, and there's a wide choice of engines – however there is a downfall, its price point.. Its just a tad too expensive for what you get, and compared to other cars you can get for the money. The biggest change on the new car is the new electrics systems which brings improved functionality and should hopefully address the unreliability issues.

Performance
All of the models are nippy, but lack that little something. The 1.6 version is the best in terms of performance and fuel economy. The 2.0 litre engine is a 140bhp or a 180bhp in the Feline model, although with near identical torque outputs they feel similar on the road. Peugeot has a strong reputation for good diesel engines and the diesel models (2.0 with 90 or 110bhp) are both frugal and fun to drive, especially the D-Turbo 110bhp version. These diesel units were later replaced by 1.6 HDi units in 90 and 110bhp forms and a 2.0 HDi produces 136bhp. Smaller units are hindered by the 307's substantial bodyweight.

New Peugeot 307

Handling
The car just isn't as nippy as the Peugeot 306. This is most probably because added improvements and features make the car heavier than it is. But it is solid, safe and very easy to drive. You would think parking and slow manoeuvring would be easy, but it is not – due to the fact the rear pillars are chunky and reduce drivers visibility. Suspension copes well with bumps but doesn't roll too much around corners.

Equipment
The car is well equipped but you should get more for your price point. Models come with a CD sound system and electric mirrors - The S model includes alloys, climate control air-con and a 6-speaker stereo. The SE which is only available as a 5-door has climate control, heat-reflecting windscreen, light-sensitive rear view mirror, CD autochanger. XSi gets sports detailing, cruise control, part leather trim and 17 inch alloys. New Feline model is the range topper but not intended to be as overtly sporty as a GTI. It has full leather and 180bhp engine with spoiler and metallic paint a standard.

Score: 7/10
